The "Weird" Kid [Junior HomeRoom]

I was trying to get in my locker when someone shoved me into the lockers hard. I turned and saw one of the football jocks walking away with his friends. "Egotistical jerk," I said under my breath as I opened my locker and started pulling out books before home room. "Time for another day in my most favorite place," I told myself sarcastically. I walked into home room and immediately fell on my face. "What the?" I looked at the floor of the door and saw a string going across it as everyone else laughed. I sat down in my seat in the corner. They all knew I was different. So did I. I just didn't understand why I was the only one like this. Was I as alone as I thought?

Wearing a light green shirt, and a heavy black sweater, I rush through the cafeteria. No empty tables. Damn. A lone boy sits at a table near the corner, and I slide into the bench on the other end. I start shovelling down food hoping to finish before he can talk to me or notice.

I glanced at the girl who sat at my table. Where I was usually alone. "Oh thank the lord," I say. "Someone deemed me worthy enough to grace me with their presence," I continued sarcastically. I mostly ignored her as I pulled out my lab top and tried to go into a flash game website that the school had blocked. "No worries," I told myself as I started working through it and in about a minute I was killing zombies in the flash game of the week.

Um. I mutter, staring down at my food. I hear beeping and clicking coming from his computer, and I edge over closer to the screen. I was now sitting directly across from him, looking at the back of the computer screen. He seemed like he wasn't wanted either. Maybe we were the same. Unloved. Unwanted, out cast... I muster enough courage to talk to him thinking that even if he did think I was totaly retarted and walked away, I would have talked to some one that day. Besides, the extra pain wouldn't hurt anymore than anything else. What are you doing? I whisper. After the words leave my lips I start doubting that it was a good idea, and start praying he wouldn't have heard my question.

I looked at the girl a little surprised she was even talking to me. This was a first. "Just playing some flash games," I told her as I shotgunned a couple of zombies, while trying to save some random pedestrian.

I raise my eyebrows at him sweetly. Huh? I ask totally lost. He talked to me! Wow. Normally I was the one they teased, and shunned. Maybe he didn't know that that was how you were supposed to treat me.

"Ya know, Flash Games," I repeat. "Like Line Rider, Endless Zombie Rampage and Cube Field. They're just these games that people who are good at programming come up with when their bored. They're easy to play, easier to make and new ones come out by the hour," I say while mowing down the undead with a chain-gun. I was really surprised someone was sitting near me let alone talking to me. "You wanna try one?" I ask hoping I didn't weird her out with my rant.

My eyes widen, and I look up and stare into his eyes for the first time. Ok. I say, and move over to the other side of the table. I sit a foot away from him, and start getting jittery.

I pushed the laptop closer to her. "With this one you just click on the zombies to kill them and use the arrow keys to avoid them," I tell her. "It's an easy one to start off with I guess," I say.

I let my hand rest on the key board, and tap the buttons. I blew up. I tried again and again, but I didn't have the eye coordination for this sort of extreme sport. I push the laptop back at him after failing. It's more fun to watch you. I tell him, and lean on my hand watching him.

"Not much of a gamer are you?" I ask. "Not that there's anything wrong with that. You're probably good at something that's useful or cooler," I say. At that moment one of the guys from the football team decided to accidentally spill a carton of milk down my back. "Oh come on!" I shout as I shivered from the sudden cold.

I walk casually into the cafeteria and glance around. The jock table; or at least the place where all the sports oriented people sat, was empty except for a few football players. And I definitely did not want to sit by those jerks. I feel a sudden wave of humiliation. All the runners were at a track meet in the town over. And I hadn't qualified. This was due to the fact that I had the flu. Roxy took one look at me and went to get antibiotics. So I missed the qualifying meet, and now I was missing this one. I could have done it. Why didn't I do it? Why couldn't I just tough it? They are probably running their hearts out this minute, I think enviously. The only table open has two kids crowded over a laptop. Well, here goes. Leaving jock territory, entering unexplored geek territory. I smack my tray down on the table and pull out a chair. I recognized one of the kids. He was in my....was it Science class? Weren't we partners with that one volcano? I should probably know his name; but I don't remember it. Oh well. "Hey," I say with a smile. "How's it going?"

"Oh, hey," I say awkwardly. "Did we work on a project together?" I asked recognizing the girl and wondering why she was seeming to take more interest in me now that we weren't forced into a group. Maybe she was just here to play a joke I don't know.

Oh, dang it. He remembered....and now I was supposed to remember his name. "Uh, yeah. We made a volcano, and when it erupted it permanently stained the science room floor." I laugh a little at that memory. "Mr. Dee tried so hard to get it off, but it's there to stay." I wrack my brains...name, name.

"Yeah," I said smiling at that. "I was always better at computer science then chemistry," I tell her. I think someone else in our class called her Smarts or something. She was one of track runners so I guess I wasn't super surprised she probably didn't remember my name. "It's Aron by the way," I say to both girls.

"Oh yeah...I knew that," I say sarcastically. "I'm Arty," I say, glancing down at my tray. A graying pepperoni pizza slice was laying in some kind of gravy, and what was that fuzzy thing in the corner? Canned peaches? I push the tray away, disgusted. Instead, I feel in my pocket until I find an energy bar. I peel of the wrapper and take a bite, chewing thoughtfully. "Computers, huh?"

Before the girl can even thump her tray on the table, I had already subconciously scooted over from the boy about a foot, and looked at her hands. As I listen to the conversation, my spirits sink. So, they already knew each other. So he wasn't a loner like me, who might, since he was desperate for friendship, befriend me. Nope. Not happening. I sigh softly, and dig my nails into the back of my hand. Stupid KC, stupid! Don't let yourself open up like that! No one is going to every love you or care about you like you would for them.
"No one wants a scrawny, pesky piece of trash like you! Thats why you haven't been taken for good, and now I have to take care of you!" I hear the words of the foster home director echoing in my ears. This was only supposed to happen in movies, not my life. I bit my tongue, causing it to bleed. An iron taste fills my mouth, and I choke a little. Hi. I say softly with out lifting my head.

Two people talked to me in one day, one was a known athlete. I had to call B.S. on this. "Okay so what's the prank?" I ask straight out. "No way two people decide to sit with me and talk to me in one day. Especially two girls. I'm not that lucky," I say wondering what the joke was.

I blink at him, taking another bite of my energy bar. "No prank. Just me, sullenly sitting here while my entire team is competing two hours away."

"So what you're telling me is that the only reason you chose to sit here is because you have nobody better to sit with?" I asked in a slightly accusing tone as I look her in the eyes.

I can't help but smile slightly. This guy was good. "Actually, no," I tell him. "Because I could have chosen to sit with those idiots," I gesture at the football players, who had found another victim and were stuffing him in the garbage can, face first. "And you guys are definitely better than them."
