I lead Dev down an alley a block or two away from the Hideout, and and wave my hand at a building closest to us. "Here." I tell him, and turn on my heel. "Take me to Junie."

I shake my head at him. "You just don't get it, do you?" I asked. "How can I put this in simpler terms. Let's see, I don't trust you?" I nodded at the building. "Proof."

"What do you want me to do? Give you the password, bend down at your feet and worship your Highness?" I snap at him. I was just ready to get my Junie back. I didn't want to deal with this guy anymore. I just wanted to smell her little kid shampoo, and listen to her tell me about the craziest things.

I crossed my arms and stared at him. "All right. I help you rescue her now, then on the way home, I follow you to the hideout. I don't have to go in so I don't ruin your reputation as being totally trustworthy and reliable. I will watch you go in, and you don't have to tell anyone, and besides they'll never even know I know. Okay? Now let's get past this stupid thing. In here," I gestured towards a building with a for sale sign in the window. I leaned against the door and shoved it open. The interior was dark and empty, perfect for the shadowing.

Sometimes this kid got on my nerves. Okay, all the time.

Rocket was looking at me with a mixture of disgust and annoyance. "Just take my hand," I spat at him. "And don't make any snide comments about how little kids only hold hands." I grabbed his hand, closed my eyes in the near darkness, and concentrated.

Silence. And then I looked down and saw only my hand, seeming to float, bodiless, grasping his. Halfway there. I gritted my teeth. "Be prepared to die, okay?" I hissed. "I haven't ever done this before." And then I pulled.
