| Lazarus's dream had brought him here, that much he knew.
However, he didn't know how to dream out of the Fortress of Them.
Every time he tried to go into the light of the outside world, it was too much to handle. Even the light of the stars at night scarred his weak skin. The one time he ventured out the door and into the sunlight, he felt like he was on fire. It would take weeks before he was strong enough to venture outside.
But oh, when he could. Then it would be his time. He could realize the destiny bestowed on the universe. Nobody else liked it, not at the Hideout. Why didn't they see it was all in the master plan? Why couldn't they accept their fates?
At least They understood. Didn't They? They took him and and gave him shelter when the dark consumed him and the Fallen rejected him. Him, their brother! And just because he felt like the universe should be dark. Just because he had just one little outburst. One little skirmish. What's a catfight between brothers?
Enough, apparently. Cain was that man who killed his brother, right? Well, that would be Lazarus's new name. Cain. He would kill his brothers. Oh, it would hurt him, deeply, but he would get over it. Once the master plan had been carried out and all was as it was meant to be, he would see that their deaths would not be in vain. Poor, misinformed Fallen. He, the Risen, would lead them.
But for now he relegated himself to patrolling the halls of the Fortress. He hoped to find one of the new brothers, someone to ease the pain of being anxious to go out into the world and complete the work set before him. Anything to pass the time until then.

| I hurry down the dark marble staircase, shrugging into the sleeves of my army jacket along the way. I was going out into the world; couldn't spend more than a night in this evil place. Maybe I could stay away for several days, avoiding any of my relatives and the other Shadows. But I was bound to run into them somewhere. Ever since my father decided They needed to get jobs in order to keep an eye on the Fallen, They were everywhere. So now there was no escape for me. No way to avoid the deathly truth- I was one of Them, and the heir to Their throne. Not that my father was dying any time soon because of his newest feast, but still. It was there, in the future, lingering in the back of my mind. Would it always be there? Or could I somehow escape it? The stairs seem to go on forever, and I long to take the banister like I did when I was a child; to fly down it past the huge windows that overlooked the sea. Even now, during the "day" at the Fortress, it was like night. Except there were no stars. There were never any stars in the sky above the Fortress. I touch the banister gently, it was cold. When I reach the bottom I see another figure, but weren't we all just dark figures these days? We were Them, we were Shadows.
}since Lazarus is sort of one of Them, should I put you in the Shadow group?

| ((Sure, I guess. Whatever you want.))
He turns to look at the other man (he heard Dev coming down the stairs, it's awfully quiet in here), and grins like the maniac he's become.
"Well, good evening, brother," Lazarus calls out. It's odd, him being in here: he sucks no light from the room, but is black and unreflective himself: it's almost as if he was only a painting, a projection of Them. His eyes bore into Dev only by the way he has consciously set them, and there's nothing spectacular about them aside from their extraordinary plainness of color: no hidden pits of black waiting to devour light, no black hole pulling hope from one, just a fine, clear, matte black. They're unsettling in their simplicity.
"Where might you be going this fine night?" He asks, his teeth showing in the grin he's speaking through. Ugh, what is that he's doing-- he's bending his fingers all wrong and twisting them oddly, as if it was some sort of painful compulsion. His head tips to one side, and then the other, and back again, watching Dev's progression with those ink-black eyes.

| "Nothing really," I reply coolly, because that was how I acted with everyone around here. This guy was a little disturbing; the way he was looking at me. It takes some serious will power not to look away or flinch. Instead, I look up at him and smile back, but it is a smile full of antipathy. I zip my jacket without my eyes leaving his. They were strange, unlike any I had ever seen. "You're new here?" | |

| "New, very new, Master." He snaps into a salute, and then bows deeply, as if one wasn't enough without the other. "HW Virginis, Lazarus Cain. I'm the man who kills his brothers." That self-satisfied smile. "I should be dead." As if it's something to be proud of, cheating death to betray your siblings. Does he blink? It's not really apparent. And it's a little odd. He's still not blinking. Maybe he doesn't need to anymore.

| "Oh, yeah?" And that's something to be pleased about? I to bite my tongue. "You must feel so fulfilled." I let a little bit of sarcasm creep into my voice. Who was this freak? So he was a Fallen? And he would just kill his siblings? Even I knew I was tied to Them in more ways than I could imagine. If it all came down to it, would I be able to turn my back on Them? Could I kill my family? I stare at the bridge of his nose, those eyes were unnerving. I clear my throat, looking at him in a different way. "So what, my father just accepted you into our, er, kingdom?" I always had trouble with switching between the 'medieval Them kingdom to modern day world' thing. Inside my pockets, I clench my fists. I wanted so bad to beat this guy into a trillion pieces. | |

| "Of course. No use for eating a dark star." His smile didn't waver. "I dreamed myself in here, this lovely place--" Lazarus spun about on his heel arms open, then faced Dev again, "It is lovely, right? ... I suppose it could use some paintings. Maybe something with green and brown." At this point he's studying the walls as if he was actually going to hire someone to paint something to decorate with. "If only I could go outside-- it sounds horribly petty, wanting to leave when I just got here... but I'll never help anyone at this rate!"

| "Lovely," I say agreeably. "And for now your help is needed here. My father has had a lot of matters to deal with lately." I glance upward as a maid comes scurrying down the staircase. I didn't agree with using humans for our servants. Even now, the girls' face is white and terrified. My father thought it was a wonderful idea. The only problem that remained was the fact that humans needed sunlight, and we didn't have any of that here. So most of the servants eventually died and were replaced. "So you were a Fallen. And you know where their headquarters are?" | |

| Finally his smile wavered. For a minute he almost looked.. well, sane. As if something about all this scared him. "Father, I can't be sure. There's black spots all over everything in my head, I don't know anymore." Suddenly his grin snapped back and the fragment of sanity relegated itself to its little corner of Lazarus's mind. "I'll find it for you, for the greater good, once I can leave this place. I promise! I swear on my own blood! ... My own blood." He gave Dev a firm stare, and let out a little giggle, as if that was some kind of joke that came across the wrong way. "You are my Mother, aren't you...? The heir to the dark?"

| My eyes widen slightly. I push my hair back with one hand. "I'm actually not your moth.." I start to say, but then think better of it. I close my mouth and run my tongue along the back of my teeth. Part of me wanted to get away from this crazed star, the other part was fascinated. This kid was a Fallen once? It was impossible. | |

| ((I keep forgetting to color code, derp))
Lazarus stares as Dev for the longest time, head tilted awkwardly sideways as if he's trying to touch his head to his shoulder, before he seems to remember what it was he was thinking of. "So, you are, aren't you? I knew, I mean. I knew without knowing. Without asking, I mean. You know?" Wow. A special talent for talking in circles, how useful.
"Well, chief. Time for you to be going?"

| }lol. they need to get together somewhere else.
I cough. "Yeah, I should go. Nice meeting you, and keep on doing your job, you're great at it." Oh dear. I sounded encouraging. I needed help. I smile weakly, giving him a slap on the back. "Have a good time, man." I walk towards the doors at the end of the hallway, pulling them open. Once they are open I am met with an endless blackness. Below, somewhere, was the sea. I close my eyes and picture light, which was an incredibly painful thing to do. In comparison, it felt like I was sawing off one of my arms and then pouring salt into the hole in my shoulder. But whatever. It was worth. I took a deep breath at just let go. And then I was gone.
