Cleaning, Planning

I pushed open the door to the small cell that was our office. Newspapers were everywhere, on the floor, the desk, tacked to the walls. I grabbed the most recent one and combed through it.
"Fire on 8th Street," I read aloud. "Hey, this might be a good lead. My eyes comb the article, and then my shoulders sagged. "No go," I say. "The fire was proved to be caused by an old stove that was left on."

I follow her into the office, whinning and complaing the whole time. I thrust myself into a chair, ignoring the papers stacked on top of it. What are we looking for again? I ask her my eyes scrunched shut.

"Well first," I say, "You can recycle all the newspapers in that pile." I pointed. "Those ones have already been looked through. Cori, I've already told you, we're looking for strange things in the news that may have been caused by a Fallen one transforming."

Ugh. I say kicking the chair, and getting up. I dump the papers into the recycling bin, and sit back down with a huffy sigh. How do we really know that that fire was caused by the stove? I ask challenging her. What if thats just what they said, because they didnt know how to explain it?

I feel pride swelling in my chest. "Exactly. We don't know, and we can never assume anything." I pretend to hold a microphone in my hand and adopt a newscaster's cheery voice. "Attention! Calling all Searchers! We have a lead! I repeat. We have a lead!" Then I sigh, my spirits still high, but a little lower than before. "We only have three. You, me, Rocket. And no Council, at all."

Some times Diggs. I point out, rubbing my temples. But your right, we seriously need to get our butts moving and collect some stars. I tell her. Then, more stars found, more searchers, and a council.

I stand up, and envelope her in a hug. Don't we all under pressure. I tell her softly.

I sink into her arms and blink back frustrated tears. I didn't want her to see them, because I was strong. "What if...." I blink some more, letting my fears get the best of me. "What if They do extinguish all light in the universe? What if nothing we can do will stop Them?"

I kiss the tears off her cheek, feeling like a total guy. Its gonna be ok. I tell her trying to be comforting, but she never broke down. It was always me, and she was always on the comforting side. Your doing great. I tell her, weakly smiling feeling like a total failure at compassion. Then I curse my self for thinking about my self when she needed help. I was hopeless. I push those thoughts from my head, and lean her head on my shoulder, patting her back.

I let out a shuddery breath and thank Alkaid that I have a twin sister.

Okay, so we need to have like a huge searchers date at the mall this weekend in the guise of a bunch of bored teenagers. We'll just keep an eye out for new stars? I ask her, already forumulating a plan in my head.

"Yeah, 'cept we don't have any Searchers," I sniffed, drying my eyes on my sleeve. "And we don't have a Council."

Yeah... I say, leaning back on the wall and closing my eyes to think. Wait! What if we had everyone come, and then we could see how the handle things to see if we could make them permenant Searchers?

I jumped up from my chair, red hair flying everywhere. "Cor, that's brilliant!" I sat down again and lowered my voice. "Except they can't know it's actually a test. We have to see how good they are when they aren't trying to impress anyone."
